Tracing Shadows: A Design-Inspired Retreat at Tulum's La Zebra
Why Before Where
What I Asked AI While Researching This Trip
These were the real questions I ran through ChatGPT and other AI tools while exploring what destinations would fit my situation.
Where can I go alone that makes it easier to work with a clear head for a few hours a day, and then genuinely step away? Somewhere the day has an obvious “off switch” without me forcing it.
What destinations are best for a solo reset that blends focus and inspiration? Places where the environment feeds your taste instead of numbing it.
Which places tend to work when you want to stay lightly connected to responsibilities but not get swallowed by them? Where the setting supports flow instead of friction.
Where in the world can I go if I want mornings that feel structured enough to finish real work, and afternoons that feel like exploration? Culture, craft, and texture that actually changes what I notice.
What destinations are best for design-obsessed travelers who want something specific and intentional? Spaces and neighborhoods that feel like a point of view, not a generic “luxury” template.
Which regions tend to be good for people who want calm without boredom? Quiet enough for concentration, alive enough for creative energy once you step out.
Where can I go that reduces the mental overhead of logistics so I’m not spending my “reset” managing details like a producer?

Review Highlights
(12 of the most relevant and recent reviews from real guests)"From the moment I arrived at Lula by Le Zebra, I knew I was stepping into something extraordinary. The property itself feels like a modern magical treehouse, it's earthy, intentional, and deeply connected to the land. The grounds are lush and built around the trees rather than cutting them down, with thoughtful touches everywhere: foot rinses at every entrance, outdoor shower by the beach, and a rooftop above the spa and shala where the sunrises feel sacred. My oceanside room was spacious and cool with full air conditioning, a comfortable bed, luxurious pillows, and a daybed for lounging. The hammock chair on the balcony became one of my favorite spots to just sway and listen to the sea. Turndown service with tea and cookies each night was the perfect little ritual of comfort. The Staff & Service: The service at Lula is impeccable, warm, and heartfelt. Every interaction was infused with kindness. Housekeeping was consistent and always thoughtful, Rosa and Theresa especially stood out. One morning I realized I'd left behind my bathing suit cover-up and the team had already found it for me before I even asked. The staff truly care about your stay and go above and beyond in ways both big and small. The Food Was A Culinary Journey at La Zebra!!! Because I was there during low season, La Zebra's kitchen prepared meals for both properties, Lula and La Zebra. What an absolute blessing! The food was, without exaggeration, some of the best I've had in my life. Chef Raziel, with the brilliant team (Gabriel, Juan Pablo, and Daniel) alongside the attentive servers (Christian, Adolfo, Manuel, Leo, Damian), created meals that felt like love stories on a plate. Every dish was intentional and allowed the ingredients to shine. Over the course of the retreat, I enjoyed a journey through cuisines: Whole grilled fish that felt like a feast from the sea itself, Fresh ceviche served in coconuts, both vibrant and tender, Sashimi that melted on the tongue, Grilled chicken cooked to juicy perfection, Crisp cucumber salads, colorful fruits, velvety hummus, and more. Each meal arrived with 2-3 appetizers, 2 mains, and a dessert. The abundance was stunning and the freshness unmatched. They even used copal smoke and fans during meals to ease the mosquitoes, such a thoughtful detail. Truly, this team and their food were a highlight of the entire retreat. The Retreat & Wellness Experience: I came to Lula for a women's wellness retreat curated by Chara, with movement offerings guided by Ricardo, Chara and others. Together they held a beautiful container that balanced structure with spaciousness. Each ceremony, from the cenote to cacao to temazcal to the floating at Sian Ka'an revealed new layers of healing and wonder. Chara's gift is her devotion to women's wellness and soul nourishment. She carefully created experiences that helped us push our edges while also allowing room to rest, to choose, to simply be. Ricardo's gentle masculine presence grounded our group, especially in the movement classes, adding balance and steadiness. I felt both supported and free throughout my stay. Final Reflection: Lula by Le Zebra is not just a hotel. It is an oasis. A place where luxury and intention meet. A space where you feel both cared for and at ease. If you are considering a stay here, do it. Lula is magical. I will absolutely be back. Insider tip: Bring mosquito repellent. Also, there are certain times of year where the seaweed is horrible and this time was one of them."
"Update from March 2023: we were back already in May 2023, our second visit and they really made us feel like regulars. Consistent, welcoming and genuine recognition for our return visit. Service is next level. Wow! La Zebra is one of those places that you'll never forget. It's a charming boutique hotel, with everything you need to unwind, relax and enjoy the beauty of Mexico. Safe, quiet, calm. A gem in Tulum. Here's what we look for while traveling: - personalized service - amazing food and drinks - options to keep our son occupied and off screens when we can La Zebra accomplished ALL of these. Service second to none. This started before we even arrived. Speaking with the concierge (Sai is the best!) to organize and prepare before we got there: - private, comfortable transfer to and from the airport. - activities for our 6 yr old - spa and massages booked - dinner reservations Sai and the team at the front desk ensured our visit was exactly what we were hoping for, and then some. The hotel offers a great balance: options for the children to enjoy, yet still providing a romantic getaway for couples. A cool place to come for the day, or stay for the week like we did. The restaurant at La Zebra is unbelievable. Ingredients are locally sourced, mouth-watering, delicious and beautiful masterpieces. The servers take great care in catering to your every need. Moises and a few others were helpful, patient and always happy. Friendly, laid back atmosphere. Our son loved the ocean. It was steps from our room, and he played for hours on the beach. The plunge pool outside our room was clean, warm or cool, and he loved it. Piñata class: He had a blast with Flor making a piñata, and then enjoyed breaking one for candies (of course). Flor was friendly, kind and great to speak to. We also did a family cooking class: For the cooking class, we got to see how the in-house corn tortillas are literally made from scratch. Unreal. The best tacos ever. Such a fun, family experience. We really enjoyed a Barefoot beachfront dinner. Something about the ocean, sand in your toes, amazing service and a delicious meal .. talk about luxury. The Chef's Table was my favorite experience. Wow! Each course was a historical journey through all of Mexico. Private, exclusive, and so much fun. Each course unlike the other; unique, tasty, and so yummy. The chef described each course, and they were perfectly paired with hand crafted drinks (non alcoholic also an option). Our room was comfortable, quiet and nicely appointed. The turn down service was next level. Diffuser running making the room calm and ready for bed. Tea and chocolates (from a local chocolatier from Tulum) waiting for you. The view of the ocean right outside our door. It was literally paradise (we were in room 2). A beach bed reserved for our room category, meant no stress for an ocean front spot on the beach. The beach was clean, and cared for. They worked so hard on it every day. We did several massages on the beach in the week we were there. The therapists were talented and the breeze from the ocean was perfection. Overall, La Zebra has something for everyone. It had that luxurious, exclusive feel, while still welcoming you with the comfort of familiarity. You feel like you belong and they are there for you. We will be back!"
"We arrived in La Zebra without a reservation — but with luxury insurance: the advice of the fantastic Mezzanine Orchid, also from the Colibrì Hotels group. We wanted to see the rooms, feel the place... choose at the moment. And never choice was happier. Since our arrival we have met a staff of rare kindness. A huge thank you to Catalina and David: helpful, smiling, impeccable. They showed us two options, and then it happened: the Casita. Love at first sight. It is the only one of its kind in the entire hotel: intimate, authentic, small only in size but great in character. A little gem with a private garden where time slows down and Tulum seems to speak to you in a whisper. We immediately felt at home... a house overlooking the sea, detail not bad! The restaurant strikes the perfect balance between quality flavors and relaxed atmosphere — curated dishes, fresh ingredients and service that pampers you without ever being intrusive. The beach club is an invitation to pure bliss: comfortable loungers, transparent sea, great cocktails and that holiday air that embraces you and tells you: “Don’t move from here.” In summary: The Zebra is everything you imagine when you dream of Tulum... close to the nightlife but super quiet and relaxed, with a big heart and lots of special people backstage. We will be back soon ♥️"
"Our stay at La Zebra was absolutely extraordinary. From the very moment we arrived, we were greeted by the warmest, most welcoming staff who made us feel like family. Their kindness and attentiveness were unparalleled, always going above and beyond to ensure we had everything we needed. The rooms were absolutely stunning. They were clean, comfortable, and had views that took our breath away. We couldn’t get enough of the beach right outside our door. You're just footsteps away from everything! As for the food—wow. Some of the best I’ve had in Mexico, hands down. The restaurant, sitting right on the beach, is the perfect spot to enjoy a meal while soaking in those amazing views. It’s an experience all on its own. The hotel itself is stunning. Every detail is thoughtfully designed, and you can really feel the spirit of Tulum throughout the place. It’s a perfect blend of beauty, comfort, and local charm. What truly made this experience stand out, was the exceptional staff. From the front desk and kitchen team, to the managers, everyone was so incredible. They went above and beyond to make us feel at home, and honestly, I’d come back just for how great the staff is. I can’t say enough good things—La Zebra is a gem, and I’ll definitely be back."
"My husband and I had an amazing time staying at La Zebra hotel, a cute and luxurious boutique hotel. The rooms were spacious and comfortable, offering breathtaking views of both the beach and the jungle. The hotel staff provided exceptional service, cleaning our room during the day and preparing it for the night by closing the curtains, setting up the bed, and leaving delicious treats and tea. The staff was incredibly friendly and cheerful, always checking if we needed anything and promptly attending to our requests. The hotel's restaurant was a highlight, serving delicious authentic Mexican food with an amazing view of the beach. While we thoroughly enjoyed our stay, there were a couple of things to note. The amount of seaweed on the beach prevented us from swimming, which is an issue affecting many Caribbean beaches and not the hotel's fault. Additionally, the prices seemed to be catered to tourists, with meals being significantly more expensive than in the US. The surrounding resorts, restaurants, and stores offered similar pricing, and Tulum city is not within walking distance, leaving limited options for exploring without taking a cab, which costs around US$60 for a round trip. Overall, La Zebra hotel provided a wonderful and memorable experience, and we would highly recommend it for a luxurious and relaxing getaway."
"This place is paradise! We stayed for a week in the Beachfront Plunge Pool room and we couldn't be happier with our choice. La Zebra is truly a luxury boutique hotel with the ideal location, impeccable hospitality and delicious food. The room was beautifully decorated and the housekeeping staff kept it sparkling clean through our stay. The turndown service was a warm touch and we really appreciated the little surprise treats every evening. The room came with a reserved beach bed which was amazing. The beach bar staff were so friendly and prompt with keeping our mezcalita glasses full! We loved the restaurant as well. Special thanks to Felipe, Roger and German who were all so polite, knowledgeable and gave great recommendations. Another great perk is we could walk to the neighboring Lula hotel and get resident rates on their wellness classes (AMAZING studio!) and fantastic spa treatments. We also appreciate La Zebra promoting local artists by displaying their vibrant pieces on the property. We will definitely be visiting again! No complaints!"
"The property was well maintained and had a good layout. The restaurant/kitchen that fed us for all meals was amazing. The cocktail choices were also very well selected and balanced. Lots of fresh fruit which my family likes. Room was spacious and the staff was very accommodating. The mosquito repellent that they had was an all natural variety that did not cut the mustard. Highly recommend bringing your own for dinner and activities that are not water related because you can't use repellent at cenotes or swimming with sea life."
"I reserved this hotel for a spontaneous 2 night stay I booked day of & based off the reviews of other patrons & what they said about the extremely comfy beds w luxury bedding. When we arrived that evening, we were told we wouldn’t actually be staying at Le Zehra but at the next door property now managed by La Zehra (use to be Lula). So my stat rating is purely based off my experience w this surprise & the fact that these beds are literally the most basic cheap mattress w simply a sheet and thin bedding, doors do not seal shut so bugs got in at night, my boyfriend had to carry quite interesting bug out each morning that we’re hanging on the drapes that I can only assume had cctawledin through the crack of the sliding door because it didn’t seal as well as mosquitoes that would come in through the crack from the door not closing and sealing shut, even though locked so it was kind of scary falling asleep as I was thinking I would wake up with one on me after seeing what had called in the first morning. the fact that I booked purely off of a search for luxury bedding, comfortable bedding and to stay at La zebra and what is pictured. The staff is AMAZING and food great"
"This hotel is an absolute hidden gem. It was so perfect for our family. A lot of Tulum is people in their 20s, but this boutique hotel is perfect for anyone, especially families. We are in our 40s with a 10 year old son. It is on a quieter stretch of the beach, but still close and walkable to anything you need (coffee, restaurants, shopping, etc.). The staff were incredibly kind, the food was great, and for once, there was absolutely no stress about getting good beach chairs/beds. The beach is gorgeous with white sand and turquoise waters. There were even small waves to keep our son entertained. This is true relaxation, but still in a very upscale setting."
"Good vibes and a lot of character. Lots of comfortable spaces to sit by the beach, restaurant, rooftop, outside your room. Food was great, and prices reasonable. The staff were very helpful with arranging transportation for day trips and to the airport. Wet bar pool is a lot smaller than it looks in pictures. But most of the hotels on the strip have small pools or no pool. The ocean is right there!"
"Absolutely loved La Zebra Tulum! The vibe is relaxed and bohemian. Perfect if you're looking to unwind and disconnect. The wellness activities (yoga, meditation) were amazing. Food options were great with lots of fresh, local ingredients."
